One of the convenient tools in D2L is the ability to grade Discussion topics in Discussions and have the grades automatically go into a Grade item. To do this, let’s first go to the Discussion area and click on Edit Topic next to the topic we want to link:
From here, we need to go to the Assessment tab:
Under Grade Item, we can select an existing Grade Item. However, in this case, there isn’t a Grade Item for the Discussion Topic. So, let’s click on the “New Grade Item” link to create one. This will cause a pop-in window very similar to the “New Grade Item” form from the Manage Grades area. We fill it out with a name and hit “Save”:
Lastly, we fill out the Max points in the Discussion area (I strongly recommend you use the same points in Discussions that you use in Grades.) and hit Save. The Discussion Topic and Grade Item are now linked.
When the discussion is over and it’s time to grade, we’ll go back to the Discussion area and click on Assess Topic in the dropdown menu next to the topic.
