Delete a Grade Column / Item

We all have done it. You created or copied a grade column and decided you don’t need it. So, you want need to delete it. Here’s how to go about this.

First, go to Grades -> Manage Grades. 

Under More Actions, click “Delete”.

From here, you can pick the items and categories you want to delete. Check the box next to the item you would like to delete. When you’re finished making your selection, simply click Delete and confirm.  Notice, this will also remove scores, so be sure you want to delete before confirming.

If you have an item that you’d like to delete, but the checkbox is greyed out and un-checkable, this is because this grade item is still linked to another tool in D2L. That other tool’s assignment/quiz/discussion topic needs to be deleted or the link removed.  To find the link this grade item is associated with, click on the gray question mark icon (?) next to it.

So, in this example, in order to remove this Grade Item, we must first remove the association with the Assignment 1 folder. Since this is an assignment, we navigate to the assignment tab and click on the title to edit the assignment. Then, click the “In Grade Book” menu and change this to “Not in Grade Book”. Make sure to click “Save and Close” to confirm your changes.

Now the the grade item has been unlinked from the assignment, go back to Grades -> Manage Grades again and click “More Actions” -> Delete:

You’ll notice the Assignment 1 can now be checked, thus allowing it to be deleted. Click Delete and confirm and the grade items will be gone.

Note: If you are trying to delete an External Learning Tool, you will have to delete the item from your course content before the Grade Item can be deleted. Be sure to select “Permanently delete both the topic from Content and the associated file or activity from the course” when you delete the content item to make sure no files associated with that activity will block the Grade item from being deleted.
