Embed Video or Other Item with Code

The web is rich with wonderful content that we can bring into our courses. However, it can sometimes be distracting to open a link to another website. It may even result in your students not coming back to D2L, as distractions abound on other sites.

If you’d rather keep them focused by keeping them inside the course, one solution is to “embed” the content you’re wanting to use. Embed code is available on many websites so you can watch the video or interact with the website directly inside the D2L page, almost as though it’s a native part of the D2L page. Note that not all content has embed capability; look for an Embed Code on the site you’re hoping to use. If you see an Embed Code option somewhere on the site, you can embed the content into your course.

No matter which of the below methods you’d like to use, the first step is to copy the embed code from the material’s website. It might look something like this:

Be sure to select and copy the entire embed code before starting the process below.

Also note that for YouTube videos, they’ve made the process very easy. The embed code is simply the URL. So if you’re wanting to embed a YouTube video, simply copy the URL and use it as the embed code for the below processes.

Embed directly into a module or submodule #

First, navigate to the content module in which you’re hoping to embed the material. Then, click the Upload/Create button, and choose “Video or Audio”. Note: Even if you are attempting to embed something other than a video or audio file, this process will work the same.

Upload Create button clicked and Video or audio menu link has appeared.

In the new screen that appears, paste the Embed code in the Web Video or Audio tab, and give your content a Title.

Add video or audio window

Then, click Save, and you should be taken to your new content page, complete with the embedded video.

Embed into an existing course document, assignment, or quiz: #

Sometimes, you may want to embed the video into an already existing content document, or perhaps a quiz or assignment. In this case, the process is pretty similar. Once you have your Embed Code copied, go to the assignment/quiz/page etc. where you’re wanting to embed the material, and click in the location you’d like to insert your embedded content. Then, click the Insert Stuff icon.

insert stuff icon

In the window that appears, choose Enter Embed Code (you may have to scroll down a bit to see it).

Paste the embed code into the box, and click Next. You should see a preview of the content. Click Insert to insert the content.

Now, you should see the content embedded where your insertion point had been placed. Save and Close your assignment/quiz/page.
