Give a student special access to an Assignment submission folder

Sometimes students need to turn in work late. Instead of having the student email you and risk losing the file, have them submit to the same Assignment submission folder by giving them Special Access.

Special Access gives students access to a folder that is outside the date range without alerting other students. This is critical if you have confidential reasons for extending a submission folder.

To do this, click on Edit Folder in the drop down next to the Dropbox folder’s name:

Edit Folder

Then, click on the Restrictions folder:

Special Access options

From here, we have two options for Special Access. The first extends an assignment the rest of the class has access to. It is used most of the time. The second option will hide the folder from everyone who does not have Special Access. Be careful using this option, but it can help hide assignment files you don’t want students seeing yet. For the case of this example, let’s say we are giving Aarnie an extra week to finish this paper, so leave the first option for the rest of the class and then click “Add Users to Special Access”:

Aarnie Special Access

We then click on the End Date, pick the date we want and be sure the check box next to Aarnie’s name is checked. This means Aarnie will get this special set of rules. When done, click on “Save” and we are done.
