Long Answer (LA) questions are a good thing to add to quizzes. It allows students to be assessed at a higher level of thinking and can also discourage copying of answers between students.
There is one big drawback to LA questions though, the instructor has to grade them. So, let’s take a look at how to do this. First click on Grade from the drop down next to the name of the Quiz you want to grade:

There are two ways to grade LA questions, sorted by User/Attempt or by Question. If you go by user, you’ll be able to review each students quiz attempt and grade the LA questions. This is how I’ll do it here. However, if want to try the Question method and grade 1 question at a time for all students, click on the Questions tab. Since, I’m grading the Attempt 1 for Aarnie, let’s click on that:

This will show you the entire attempt, including the already graded multiple choice questions. (You can edit the MC questions here as well if there’s a mistake.) We scroll to the LA question we came here to grade and expand the question feedback:

Notice, we can put a score in here, even a decimal along with typing in some feedback. Unfortunately, this quiz is still marked ungraded until we scroll back up and mark it as “Graded” and click Save and Close.
