Add a new discussion forum

The Discussions tool in D2L has a hierarchy.  This goes from Forums to Topics to Threads to Replies.  Forums are the categories while Topics are the areas where students and instructors can interact with each other. Threads and Replies are the actual posts by students and instructors, but a forum and a topic must be created before posts can be made.

The first step to creating a discussion post is to create a forum, which is a category of discussion topics. Check out the video tutorial below to learn more, or view the written instructions below.

To create a new forum, navigate to your course, and click on the Discussions tab. From there, click on the “New” button and then “New Forum”.

Then, you will just need to give the forum a title.

Finally, we need to decide when this forum will be available for students to see the forum. Click on the Restrictions tab to view dates, add release conditions, add group or section restrictions and more.

Please note: Forum settings for availability will override the settings for the topics within it. It is for this reason we recommend you do not put date restrictions in the forum. However, this is your option.

Set start and end dates, release conditions and more using the Restrictions tab.

Be sure to “Save and Close” when you are done with this screen. Then, you will be able to see the created forum:

Note that the new forum title is not clickable. That’s because only topics can have posts added. View Add a discussion topic for more information.
