Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) is a requirement for accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the Department of Education for online courses to be considered Distance Education. If a course does not contain RSI, the course may instead be considered correspondence education and will not be eligible to receive Federal Financial Aid Title IV funds.
RSI means that there is instructor-initiated interaction on a predictable and scheduled basis proportionate to the length of the course. The interactions can include providing direct instruction, providing students personalized feedback on assignments, providing additional information or answering questions about the course content, and facilitating group discussions.
